Prior to joining the NCTJ in 1989 Jan worked in the printing industry for 13 years, latterly as PA to the UK president of a US printing company based in the City. She has also worked in a bank, sold aluminium and stainless steel and has been a recruitment consultant.

With over 10 years’ experience in sales and business development within the travel industry, Beverley joined the NCTJ in February 2017 as Head of development. This is a newly created post and Beverley will be responsible for business development, fundraising, sponsorship and overseeing our marketing programme. Previously Beverley worked within global exhibitions managing worldwide events and international suppliers to position their brands in line with their objectives.

Joanne joined the NCTJ in June 2003 as chief executive. She began her career in the regional press after graduating from the University of Exeter in 1987 with a degree in history. She joined the Newspaper Society’s marketing department and then moved into training as senior training officer and then training manager.
Joanne completed postgraduate qualifications in human resource management before joining the Periodical Publishers Association (PPA) in 1995. She was director of the Periodicals Training Council (PTC) for five years. For two years she combined her role at the PTC with her work to set up the Publishing NTO. Joanne was chief executive of the Publishing National Training Organisation.

Melissa was promoted to examinations controller in February 2016 after joining the NCTJ as an administrator the previous year.
Melissa graduated from the University of Lincoln with a 2:1 in English literature in 2015. She is responsible for Diploma in Journalism exam papers, marking and results, certification and aggregate results, Certificate in Foundation Journalism and reasonable adjustments.

Chris joined the NCTJ in April 2008 as head of finance and IT. He began his career in banking, working for 25 years at NatWest/Royal Bank of Scotland. He spent many years in general banking and then specialised in financial banking management.
Before joining the NCTJ, Chris worked for Rainer, a national charity for under-supported young people, as regional finance manager and systems accountant. He has more than 20 years’ experience in banking and finance management.

Kimberley joined the NCTJ as examinations administrator in November 2013 and was promoted to events and training officer in May 2015. Previously, Kimberley worked as a senior administrator for Considerate Constructors Scheme, a non-profit making independent organisation founded by the industry to improve its image.
Kimberley is responsible for events, distance learning, training and awards.

Lyn joined the NCTJ in November 2004 and is responsible for implementing our qualifications strategy, standards, and developing new qualifications to reflect the evolving skills required of journalists.
Lyn is also responsible for regulation and compliance with Ofqual, Qualifications Wales and CCEA general conditions. She manages the Journalism Qualifications Board, co-ordinates the work of our subject exam boards and oversees the implementation of quality assurance procedures and standards in relation to all qualifications. Lyn previously worked for an educational publisher and has managed a professional management training centre.

Rachel joined the NCTJ in March 2017 and is responsible for supervising the work of the NCTJ exams team and Chief Examiners to ensure the efficient administration and delivery of all NCTJ assessments. Rachel is also responsible for overseeing the recruitment and training of NCTJ examiners/assessors, the monitoring of NCTJ accredited centres, appeals and enquiries on results, investigating and reporting on malpractice and maladministration cases, and ensuring high levels of quality assurance and standards including particular needs and equal opportunities. Rachel previously worked at a speech and drama awarding organisation in London as Qualifications Manager.

Alison joined the NCTJ in May 2016 after relocating from West Sussex, where she worked as a finance administrator. Before this Alisons career background was in childcare.
Alison is responsible for the administration of the Journalism Diversity Fund, national exams, accreditation administration and apprenticeships.

Andy has been working for the NCTJ since August 2015. A qualified archaeologist, in 2006 he gave up a career digging muddy trenches to travel extensively, before settling into a long-term role within the foreign exchange industry. Prior to the NCTJ, Andy worked for the University of Cambridge as an examinations administrator.
Andy is responsible for administering shorthand exams, the NQJ exams and the apprenticeship scheme.

Hannah joined the NCTJ in January 2017 after working in purchasing for 18 months. She graduated from Canterbury Christ Church University with a 2:1 in Religious Studies in 2015.

A writer and sub-editor for more than 30 years, Katherine joined the NCTJ in January 2017. Her role is to help manage the organisation’s relationship with the 40 colleges, universities and training providers across the UK who deliver its qualifications. NCTJ-trained, Katherine began her career at the weekly Kent and Sussex Courier after graduating with a degree in English from St Andrews University. Since then she has worked for a variety of regional and national titles, including the Guardian, the Observer, the Daily Telegraph, the Daily Mail and the Spectator. Katherine continues to work as a freelance print and digital journalist, which keeps her in touch with the latest developments in the industry.
